Recorded live at The Marquee on 28 November 1986, in front of a very enthusiastic and tuneful audience, this was the penultimate performance of Twelfth Night in the 1980s.
As it was one of the last songs to be finished for the album there are very few alternative recordings of this song. It was rarely played live and this is one of the only performances captured on tape.
lyrics
Charade, caprice
Risqué, affectedly chic
En role, 'Au Naturel'
The show is over
On with the show
As the make-up breaks up
Out of the crack, charisma flows
Look at the face, look at the face
Look at the, Look at the, Look l,l,l...
A gilt/guilt disguise
Belies a silvery tongue
Undone! And after all
Well, it's hard –
The light's in your eyes!
You'll never believe theatre
The lies and deceit – theatre
We go too far
Never content with who we are
Look at the face, look at the face
Look at the, look at the, look l,l,l...
We laugh, we feel
So nice, and none of it real
It's all unnatural
A tragic performance -
Tears in my eyes
Don't ever believe theatre
The lights and the dreams theatre
Row to row, there they go – count them in
They go – "oh, oh, oh, no, no, oh no –
No way, no way, no, no, no way! No!"
Be gone. Home!
Be gone! –
I'd rather be with the lights in my eyes
Than out in the dark –
With you!

I remember the excitement when The Sentinel was released having seen the band live a few times before. I loved the album but was aware that there were tracks missing and it had been rumoured that it was to be a double album. To hear all these takes and works in progress takes me right back to the 80's and the buzz of all the new prog that was coming out back then. This is an absolutely essential purchase for any Pallas fan. nuttinikki

This is an absolutely fantastic collection featuring near perfect newer run-downs of the Atlantis suite and Wedge tracks (with Rat Racing being my definitive entrance to this period, wonderful) as well as great and heavy concert sessions of The Cross and the Crucible and Sanctuary (personal favourite). My favourite bundle so far. futureperfect93
