Brian Devoil: “I asked Geoff if he could write something with more positive lyrics in order to provide an uplifting close to the Fact And Fiction album. The result was Love Song.”
Clive Mitten: “Love Song took as long to write as it takes to play. I was showing Geoff how to move fingers on a keyboard to progress between related chords, and how easy it can be to go between notes, when the chord sequence for Love Song emerged, complete. We thought ‘oh, that’s nice’ and Geoff went off to write some words to go with the music. It’s a coda to the rest of the album and stands alone from the messages inherent within the other songs. It’s a statement that we’ve gone on this journey from We Are Sane to Creepshow and that there is life beyond.”
Jane Mann: “Two of Geoff’s greatest phrases appear in this song; ‘skittering wind-blown leaves’ and ‘take a tip from the Carpenter, forgive and love again...and again’ … the latter clearly stating Geoff’s by then very strong Christian faith. It’s still an epic. Hope springs eternal...”
Andy Revell: “Love Song is the light at the end of the tunnel.”
lyrics
Everybody has wisdom, everyone understands
Food when we are hungry, the touch of loving hands
No one is anyone's property, no one should be a slave
The joining of hearts in free will, begins a tidal wave
Don't hold back, don't think that hope is pointless
Love is a, love is a, love is a, love is an open door
Don't believe that life is closed against us
Love is a, love is a, love is a, love is an open door
And it doesn't make any difference, the colour of anyone's skin
We need the rejection of prejudice, let peace come flooding in
Jealousy is just a parasite, hatred is disease
Respect for human dignity, become skittering wind blown leaves
(Chorus)
The time is surely coming when we could all be free
When eyes for so long blinded, in opening shall see
That children may grow happily safe in the love of all
The earth a fertile garden where nobody need crawl
(Chorus)
Love is a, love is a, love is an open door
And if it seems that your hoping heart has led you into pain
Take a tip from the carpenter forgive and love again
And again

I remember the excitement when The Sentinel was released having seen the band live a few times before. I loved the album but was aware that there were tracks missing and it had been rumoured that it was to be a double album. To hear all these takes and works in progress takes me right back to the 80's and the buzz of all the new prog that was coming out back then. This is an absolutely essential purchase for any Pallas fan. nuttinikki

The first official outing of the "what would be" Steve Rothery Band. Riccardo Romano was missing with his keyboard wizardry and no singer at all (later Martin Jakubsky of Stillmarillion). Marillion's catalogue was represented by excerpts of instrumental sections where Steve had his solo spot. This is a milestone in the forming of a great band that later became the spokesman of early Marillion era and of course of Steve's solo material. If you want to hear how it all started you have to get this Alessandro Carmassi
