The Calling 04:06
You wouldn’t love me if you knew what I’m like inside, If you could see all that was true about the things I hide. If you could see behind my smile to where my ego struts its stuff, A single look would make you sick, a single look would be enough. Yet, you tell that you do, Yet, you tell me that nobody loves me like you, oh Lord. Many times I’ve failed to follow where it’s hard; Staying safe in what I know, I played the faith charade. I’ve been a Judas with a prayer, I’ve done the dirty with a smile, Many actions that seem fair were done from motives that are vile. Yet you show me hands and feet, Where the demands of love and justice meet, oh Lord. I’ve seen you starving in the poor. I’ve seen you blown apart by shells, Cold and alone on the top floor Of a hundred high-rise hells. I’ve seen your tears like a flood, in which you bathe a bleeding world; I’ve seen forgiveness in your blood, the only banner you unfurled. You say that we’re your body now, You’re telling us, we should follow you, and how, oh Lord.

Love, and you’ll be hurt. You will be rejected. They will misunderstand. You’ll be made a fool. We need love. No-one can meet his own needs. We need love. You’ve got to give love if you want to receive love. Christ was hurt. He was rejected. He was misunderstood. He was made a fool …yet he loved. Love is giving first, saying upbuilding things, Staying calm when others annoy you, Not being threatened by the talents of others, Not seeking the limelight for yourself, Giving help, showing concern. Love does not exaggerate, is not sarcastic, Never puts the other person down, Always thinks before it speaks a word, Does not criticise in a destructive manner, Is quick to forgive, praises others’ success. Christ gives us that love. Be a channel. Love endures forever.

This Time 05:29
He’s alone, he’s a refugee From the strength of desire. He’s a voice trying to hold a tune In a discordant choir. But he wants to sing it properly, To sing a song of real love. This time. She’s been mauled by every boy she likes; They leave their fingerprints on her soul. She wants to be loved as a whole person, Not just as some body with a hole. But nobody’s offering her real love, So she just takes what she can. He’s been told a lot of nonsense About a carefree, free love, About how we should all just express ourselves In uncommitted push and shove. But if he feels he can trust you, He’ll admit he needs more. She’s alone, she’s a refugee From the voice of the crowd, Who respond to having nothing much to say By all talking at once, very loud. But if she knew about real love, Why, she’d glow like a smile.

Freedom 07:15
It took a while to see That now I’m free Free to be myself Free from condemnation Free to enjoy the life That he gave to me And to be a living witness To his risen glory Content to be caterpillar - before butterfly Waiting on the Lord - without asking why Believing he came to give life - more abundantly Living by the faith he’s given me - free to be myself Free from the bonds of law Because the law-giver is the lawmaker in me. Free to enjoy the life That he gave to me Free to be myself Free from condemnation.

I know what it means, believing in dreams as they burn; Awaking in pain, trying in vain to return. A crowd of old selves, abandoned on shelves in a store, Where everyone stares, nobody cares any more. I wish I was closer to you. If love is our aim, it can’t be a game for a day. It must begin here, must be sincere, I must say. You know my name, you know my frame to an inch; How I’ll compromise, even tell lies at a pinch. For love to be real, you’ll have to peel off the crust. Help me to see, your will for me can be trusted. I love you so much, I long for your touch every day. Guide me straight back to your narrow track when I stray. May I come closer to you. I need to be closer to you. Lead me Lord closer to you.

True Riches 06:02
Bank-bills. Bailiffs. Bonds. Big business. Stock-take. Shoplifting. Boom. Bombs. Firm. Business-collapse. Capital. Depreciation. “I can’t believe the cost of insuring this lot.” “Costs me a fortune to garage, service and run this car; it really gets me down, it’s one thing after another. Replacing a wheel-hub on one of these is a three-figure bill.” Insurance. Protection racket. Credit. Debt-counselling. Gold is so cold. Gold is so cold. Greed’s the weed that chokes the cheerful heart. Monopoly. Bingo. Stocks. Insider-dealing. Shares. Credit. Status symbol. Repossession. International trade. “Give us more money or we strike!” “At last I’ve got the job I always wanted; I’m earning plenty but I’ve got no time to enjoy it.” Third World interest debts. IMF. Budget controls. Primary produce. Soil erosion. Bound for a grave where they can not take it. “The house is OK, but, you know, you look around and you want something better.” “The conclusion of the court is that this man died for want of a few thousand pounds spent on proper safety measures.” “I’m so worried about being burgled.” Savings. Inflation. Developed nation. Acid rain. Secured loan. Homelessness. “I want money!” Gold is so cold. Gold is so cold. Wealth drains contentment, no happiness is left Only the fear of fire, loss and theft. Greed’s seed is sown, men only want for more. Damage, division, death, waste and war. Seek the true riches that only God gives, Salvation, each other, creation, new lives, The challenge of loving, the growth from his discipline, The peace and assurance of being right with God. Money. Root. Evil. Wages. Sin. Death.

Trying to stop the clock from ticking, A twist on killing time, Trying to make lies look pleasant Trying to whitewash crime. Forces bent on wielding power, Forces bent to rule, Forces bent upon oppression, The profits of the cruel. The war is won, but the battle goes on. Whips and lashes, cash and coshes, Wires, dogs and guns, Behind the mask of blank benevolence Potential hatreds run. Forces move on common markets, Forces take control. Forces using any weapons To score desired goals. Around the Holy Spirit’s temples An adversary prowls; Despising love, despising goodness, Against all justice howls. Forces that will employ torture, Quite prepared to kill, Bent upon the opposition Of our Father’s will. And if it seems we are alone, That God no longer cares, His love still hangs naked on a cross In the market place of our affairs.

Growth 03:59
I’ve been here before on my knees, I’ve failed you, Lord, again. You tested my patience, And I seethed within. You tested my faithfulness, But I followed my own plans; You wanted to teach me to trust, But I took it into my hands. I fail you, Lord, every time, But I see I’m going on; My patience lasted longer this time, I can see how for I’ve come. I’ll fail you then, I’ll start again, The process will never end, But through it I’ll be more like you, Patient teacher, faithful friend. I’ve been here before on my knees, And I’ll be here again, But I mustn’t let it get me down, I’ve asked and been forgiven. I still want to go on with you, Lord, I want to be changed inside, And I know you love me, and care, My needs will be supplied.

There’s a road across the ‘more’ land, Where the wind blows sharp and keen, And although it’s cold and lonely It is on this way that every pilgrim That ever was has been. There are whispers from the ‘missed’ banks That are temptingly too sweet, But the pilgrim who is wakeful and alert ignores them; To follow them means ‘daze’ of wandering. There’s no easy answers; You cannot follow without loss, When what you gain involves a cross. No-one wins the prizes Unless they first have run the race, So run for keeps at even pace. Sometimes, travelling bleak stretches, Breathing tiredness like air, A sullen hardness of the heart becomes apparent. Pilgrim! Give no quarter, Break it down with prayer. If you slip and stumble, Remember, God will be your aid; His loving kindness never fades. Don’t be dim and stupid, Don’t play the fool in Satan’s jaws, Submit yourself to God’s good cause. Every paper I pick up, Every programme on TV, Speaks of life lived without you. And though the eyes of faith You opened in me show it as illusion, Yet it threatens to be true. Still, in my heart a flame burns, Warming my spirit in its flare; You couldn’t light it were you not there. The road itself is just as real, But what the pilgrim lacked was strength. Having received it through her prayer, the word, communion, She is lifted up amidst the world’s despair. Faith is all mysterious, A gift of grace from one who cares, Who has himself tasted the snares. Ask for faith, and gladly, God will grant you your heart’s needs. Into your deeps, his love, he’ll bleed.
16.
We Are One 02:40
There’s a small-minded man And he does all he can to divide. “We are the way, You have no say, You are blind.” We are one. There’s a hard-headed boy, And religion’s his toy to parade. “I know it all. I’m walking tall, I’ve arrived.” There’s a hot-headed girl And her mind’s in a whirl to deride. “I know my right, I’ll vent my spite, I’ll survive.”
17.
You see them on the corner, Looking for a chance to prove that they are men; Broken-bottled babies, selves shattered in a daydream, Acting out the plots they’ve witnessed on T.V. Oh weep for the city. Oh weep on your knees. Don’t give up on the city, we need your love. Love buried under concrete. The broken paving-stones brought down morality. Tattered trees bear witness to the conflict. Hounds abound and snap at wisdom’s heels. Oh weep for the city. Oh weep on your knees. Don’t give up on the city, we need your prayer. They glory in the wrong things, They’ve swallowed all the lies of those who advertise; Reality replaced by the gutter-press’s ravings; The weed of greed well-rooted in the rotten mire. Oh weep for the city. Oh weep on your knees. Don’t give up on the city, we need your care. Please pray for Jesus’ body; Bloodied hands that reach out in love. Pray protection for the front-line soldier Who stands against the lord of ruin and decay. Oh weep for the city. Intercede on your knees. We need prayer for the city, to stem the disease.
18.
Keep On 02:11
There’s a road that we’re on As we follow the Son. He’s our Lord, he’s our light, And we, his delight. Keep on, keep on to the end. Just keep on, keep on, he’s your friend. Don’t sit down on the verge, Don’t lie down in that road. Don’t stop now to build a house, Heaven’s your home. Keep on, keep on to that road. Just keep on, keep on, reach your goal. Beware of misleading signs; Keep your map in your hand. Beware of worldly advice; There’s only one way to the promised land. Don’t veer off to the left, Don’t veer off to the right. Don’t go back to the start, The end is in sight.

Magnify 03:33
Christmas is a time to write to old and faithful friends, A time to draw the family home, renew acquaintances, To cater for the lonely ones and spread your circle wide, For giving gifts as God gave his, freely without pride. Glorify Christ, incarnate Son. Gratify the needs of everyone. Christmas is a time for peace and goodwill to all men, A time to settle differences and be at one again, To entertain the little ones, and show them that you care, For going to the local church to praise our Father there. Deify the baby meek and mild. Dignify every little child. Pacify enemies at war. Beautify relationships some more. Enjoy the fruits that God provides, Feast upon the fare. With thankful hearts and open minds Sing carols round the fire. Satisfy starving refugees. Sanctify yule festivities. Magnify Christ the newborn king. Glorify the Lord of everything. Magnify…
