Art & Illusion

by Twelfth Night

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

The double CD is an expanded version consisting of the original album, contemporary demos and live material, including the first ever released version of Andy singing East of Eden.

It has some absolutely fantastic new artwork, which has been completely reworked / re-interpreted by Paul Tippett at Vitamin P (with help from our own in-built creative, Senor Sears).

All the lyrics have been lavishly illustrated with some stunning images, and there are brand new sleeve-notes from Andy Sears, Mark Hughes and Andy Wild. Here are just a couple of the pages from the booklet, a couple of live photos, and a publicity shot for the original release in 1984.

Includes unlimited streaming of Art & Illusion via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

Magic man said “You know my dear You are living inside a dream Believing the things I do Are what they seem Life is a trick that runs too quick For a volunteer from the crowd The volunteers only see What’s been allowed” The players practice to deceive With paper flowers none perceive Disappearing down the top hat corridors Art and illusion The magic show won’t let you go Magicians rehearse Their sleights of hand They slip money bags up their sleeves They saw you in half And then they turn to leave Tricks of the trade The ball games played By the jugglers centre stage Carefully handed down from age to age Conclusions made conclusions leapt Impressions lost and overstepped Shadows hide the truth With nobody the wiser Art and illusion The magic show won’t let you go They’re only trying to tell your lies Trying to make you compromise To leave reality completely up to them Art and illusion The magic show won’t let you go

So the stage is set Dumb pierrots and marionettes Swing from strings on high, time goes by To under-guided laws Cacophonous troubadors Sing their lullabies, harmonise Kings and queens set the scenes Strike the bell, carousel Suffer the socialites Secure within complacent heights Rehearse tainted lines, and rhymes Kings and Queens set the scenes Strike the bell, carousel Kings and queens, wise and green And the world turns Years are worn It goes on, on Kings and queens, wise and green And the world turns, turn! So review the play Decide which role you play The final curtain calls As it falls So the kings and queens set the scenes Strike the bell, carousel Kings and queens, wise and green And the world turns

how can we fight the diseases of the poor when colour of a nation is reasoning for war men force your surrender, then ask you to believe with the lives of many millions embroidered of their sleeves is this reason – a price to pay? give us reason – a first new day acid emotion – child of suicide bewilderment and hunger are hurting you inside while hopes find protection in the sanctuary of life another voice is silenced in the quiet of the night is this reason – a price to pay? give us reason – a first new day all breathe together, suffocate the fear let each of us in comfort share the pain, the tears, the years don’t let their hate be the dowry of a youth too humble for importance too honest for the truth is this reason – a price to pay? give us reason – a first new day give us reason – a first new day

Frightened child, give me your hand, Together our dreams will be realised Hope that flickers, within tired eyes A thousand angry hearts will raise the battle cry, to die! A thousand angry hearts will raise the battle cry. Fire burning, young hearts will bury the flag Faces glowing in the light Of words that have no strength to bite Their country sleeps soundly unaware Careful not to tilt the game Both sides must remain the same Dreams of solutions Too many years of frustrations Time after time after time Fat preachers bury their bones in secretive holes Invisible to naked eyes enclosed in metal uniforms Ulterior motives, lies and excuses Time after time after ……… Time to light the fuse Hey you with that innocent face, Stand proud of the crowd, Sugar sweet surprise Time to shatter your illusions and open your eyes Malignant deceivers puncture our veins If we fall down the chances are We'll never raise our voice again Sing to the future Here ever after Time after time after time Time to light the fuse Hey you with that innocent face, Stand proud of the crowd Sugar sweet surprise Time to shatter your illusions and open your eyes Blue powder monkey, Time to light the fuse Blue powder monkey, Time to light the fuse And raise the battle cry. Time after time after Time to light the fuse Hey you with that innocent face, Stand proud of the crowd Sugar sweet surprise Time to shatter your illusions and open your eyes Blue powder monkey, Time to light the fuse Blue powder monkey, Time to light the fuse.

about

A 24-track compilation of the original 5-track mini-album released on Music For Nations in Oct 1984, the 3 demos recorded for MCA Records earlier that year, the 4 demos recorded in Reading just before the band travelled to Amazon Studios in Liverpool to record with noted producer Gil Norton, and the 12-track live set performed on the Art & Illusion tour recorded in various venues.

The tour started in the bands hometown of Reading and ended with their first-ever gig abroad in Marburg, West Germany (as it was then).

Art and Illusion was the second Definitive Edition released in March 2010, and was the band's first album with Andy Sears, originally released in October 1984.
